私自身は世の中を傍観しながら生活するだけの、社会には何の影響力も持たない一般人だけど、傍観してきたなりに謎だらけの世の中が気になっている。
「青木」はご先祖さまが越後にやってくる前の、越前時代のファミリーネーム。
本拠地を越後に移して武士をやめた時にファミリーネームを捨てたと思うのだけど、ブログを書くにあたって私のルーツであるそれを復活させてみることにした。
日本の武家政権時代では、本拠地を移した分家がファミリーネームをその土地に合わせたものに変えてしまうということがよくあったみたいだけど、そもそも日本人のファミリーネームの「氏」と「姓」と「苗字」と「名字」の表記の違いは一体何？
戦国時代のご先祖さまの「青木」は「姓」？「苗字」？･･･いや「名字」？私にはそこがはっきりわからないので「ファミリーネーム」と書いている。
現代では、お役所文書等にファミリーネームの欄は「姓」と書かれているのだけど、そもそも一般人がファミリーネームを使うようになったのは、明治8年に公布された「平民苗字必称義務令」によるのでは？それなら平民のファミリーネームは「姓」ではなく「苗字」のはずだと思うのだけど･･･
日常的に使っているこんな些細なことにも謎が多すぎるのだけど、誰に聞いても「わかればどっちでもいいじゃん」で終わってしまう。
そんな風に、たくさんありすぎる「そんなこと、どうでもいいじゃん」レベルの謎を追いかけてみたい私です。

“Aoki” is the family name of my ancestors from the Echizen period, before they came to Echigo.
I think they abandoned their family name when they moved their base to Echigo and gave up being samurai, but I decided to revive it, which is my roots, when writing this blog.
During the period of the samurai in Japan, it was common for branch families who moved their base to change their family names to suit the local area, but what exactly is the difference between the writing of “氏,” “姓,” “苗字,” and “名字” in Japanese family names?
Was the “Aoki” of my ancestor from the Warring States period a “姓”? a”苗字”? or maybe a “名字”? I’m not sure, so I write it as a “family name.”
In modern Japan, the family name column on government documents is written as “姓,” but didn’t ordinary people start using family names in the first place because of the “Order for Commoners to Use Surnames Mandatory” that was promulgated in 1875? If that’s the case, I think commoners’ family names should be “苗字” and not “姓”…
There are so many mysteries about such trivial things that we use every day, but no matter who I ask, they always just say, “It doesn’t matter if you understand it.”
That’s how I want to pursue the mysteries of the many, many things that are at the level of “it doesn’t really matter.”
